About Banner Ads

Traditional advertising isn’t enough anymore. On average, advertising budgets/spends for online is growing 8 to 10 times faster than that of TV or radio. And if you are only spending your advertising budget in one place, you are missing out. Take a minute to consider banner advertising.

What is a banner ad?
Banner advertisements are those little rectangles you often see on the side or top of a web site page that you are visiting. Basically they are ads for other web sites, products or services that allow you to click them to be taken to the advertiser's site. It may seem simple and it is. But with a large percentage of the cumulative online advertising dollar being tied up in these little rectangles, it makes sense to try them for yourself.

What kinds of banner ads are there?
There are a number of banner ads available for you to consider depending on your budget and the purpose of the ad.

  • A static banner is an image (and possible text) - usually a jpg or a gif.
  • An animated gif is a series of images that produce an animated or slide show effect.
  • Rich media banners can incorporate video, audio and flash.

Why use them?
Why wouldn't you use them? That would be a better question. There are three HUGE reasons to incorporate banners into your advertising plan.

1. They are cost effective - Banner ads are economical to have designed and much more cost-effective than most forms of print advertising.

2. They are targetable - With banner ads, you can decide exactly what content to include and tailor it for a specific site - sometimes even having dozens of versions of an ad. Web sites tend to be more targeted than print publications allowing you to find just the right niche.

3.  They are trackable - With print ads, you can't reliably track how many people view them. With online ads, however, there are a number of ways to track effectiveness.

  • Click Through Rate refers to the number of people who click on an ad thereby taking them to the advertiser's web site.
  • Page Views refers to the number of times the page on which an ad is situation is opened. Even without a click through, 'views' help create awareness of your product and brand.
  • Click Through Rate is the percentage of people that view the page on which your ad is situation compared to the number of people that click it.
  • You can continue to track effectiveness of your online ads but tracking traffic into your site leading to sales. Are the people coming to your site actually making you money?
  • By using different creatives (images, headlines, calls to action...) you can figure out what works and what doesn't with the audience you are targeting.
