About Blogging
What is a blog?
Web + Log = Blog.
Basically a blog is a series of journal entries posted on the web. It really is that simple.
Benefits of blogging for your business
- Offers you a quick, easy and cheap way to add content to your site.
- Allows you a continuous dialogue with your customers or community.
- Could position you as a leader in your field – a go to person for specific topics.
- Increases your search engine optimization – could get you listed higher on google, yahoo or MSN search results.
Should your business be blogging?
This is a complex question with a few things to consider before deciding to start a blog for your business.
- Do you have the time to invest in a blog? If you are already stressed running your business, will you have the time to regularly post to keep your blog active?
- Do you have content or will you be able to collect it? Is there someone on your team who can write content, find links to other sites/blogs, comment on other people’s blogs etc?
Getting started
- You have options for creating your blog:
- You can design your own and host it on a number of free sites. This tends to look less professional and limits functionality.
- You can have a custom designed blog that matches the look and feel of your site and is hosted as part of your site. See below
- You’ll need to define who your audience is, what your goals are and how interactive you want your blog to be.
- Decide on a design/layout that is easy to use and doesn’t detract too much from your content.
- Plan ahead – prepare posts for those weeks that you just have the time to post something new and timely. You’ll be glad you have something in the bank when the time comes.
- See who is blogging about you and comment on their posts. You might be surprised who is talking about you and what they are saying.
Things to remember once your blog goes live
- Be consistent – have a theme or direction for your blog and stick to it. People that come back to your blog or subscribe to it want to know that the content will continue to be relevant to them.
- Post frequently – the more you post the better but don’t post unless you have something worthwhile. In other words, make sure you have something worthwhile to post often.
- Be social – link out, get links in and allow for people to post comments.
- Make your blog about your customers – not you and your business. What can you offer them to make them successful? They will come back more often if you are providing a service or resources to them.
