About Downstage

Downstage celebrated 20 years of serving the local arts community in 2024! We are now diving into the next 20 years of relevant programming that is focused on stirring up conversations about important social issues. We also love to question form and have FUN!

Our small and mighty team is located within the thriving arts ecology at Werklund Centre in Downtown Calgary. We share this creative space with Alberta Theatre Projects, Calgary Philharmonic, Theatre Calgary, Werklund Centre Presents and our neighbours One Yellow Rabbit.

After most of our performances, we host post-show conversations which give community members the opportunity to discuss their thoughts and feelings about the theatre they just witnessed. It’s inspiring to experience audience members connect in this way.

We also offer a bevy of programs geared toward the growth and development of local artists. Thanks for being part of the Downstage community!

Great Art.
Greater Impact.

Support Downstage

Downstage is a small professional theatre company and registered charity known for being resilient, ambitious and impactful. Our work is funded through a combination of ticket sales, granting programs, and the support of generous individual donors, foundations and businesses. If you’re excited by our work bringing new Canadian plays to the stage that engage with challenging topics, or increasing access to all Calgarians through our innovative approaches, please consider making a donation.

Programs

Thanks to the support of our donors, this program makes tickets available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis to anyone who wants to see one of our productions.

STAGE IT is a program focused on emerging theatre artists who want to develop themselves as creator-producers.

The Simon Mallett New Work Program offers support to artists regardless of experience who do work that lines up with Downstage’s mandate of creating conversations around social issues. We’re not looking to mold a project to be in one of our future seasons – we simply want more of this kind of theatre created and out there.
